Static Contact 630A

Static contact rated for 630A continuous duty, the most common static contact current rating in distribution-class MV switchgear. Most 12 kV feeder VCBs, motor breakers, and smaller transformer-tap breakers sit at this rating; the static contact is the fixed-side element that the moving contact mates with during closing.

Technical Notes

At 630A continuous, the static contact's cross-section is sized to handle the continuous current with margin for fault current handling. ETP copper with a silver-plated contact face is the industry default. Copper's conductivity keeps continuous-current heating manageable, and silver plating on the contact face keeps joint resistance low over years of service.

For 630A breakers in industrial environments (motor feeders, harsh atmospheres), aluminum bronze static contacts are an alternative when the contact sees more mechanical wear than typical distribution duty. Cross-section sizes up to compensate for lower conductivity; the trade-off is worth it where the application calls for it.

The 630A class is mature and high-volume. Most major MV switchgear OEMs have established designs at this rating. Refurbishment orders for installed 630A static contacts are routine.
